National Library of Peru
Lima, Peru

Intaglio engraving made in Lima at the beginning of the 20th century. XIX by Domingo Ayala, master engraver.
This print illustrates the book Novena to the Mother of God in the miraculous image that in the mystery of purification is venerated in the parish church of San Juan Bautista and Santuario de Characato... by Juan de la Cruz Errazquin y Otamendi, printed in the Printing Press of the Foundlings, 1805.
Following Ricardo Estabridis (2002), the Virgin of Characato wears a triangular composition costume, with a half-moon towards the end of her clothing, on an ornate pedestal with a small vase on each side. Above his head a resplendent halo. In one hand he holds the Child Jesus and in the other a lit lamp. Framed by two columns that support a very ornate arch.
