The panel, painted in 1454, is the only signed work by Cecchino da Verona, a late imitator of Stefano da Verona, documented for the first time in Siena in 1432 and then in Verona and in Trento.
At the center of the painting there appears Our Lady of humility, sitting on a pillow on the floor, holding Baby Jesus in her arms. Jesus is holding a fruit in his hand, which is traditionally connected to the Tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil with reference to Christ’s redemption from the Original Sin. Around Jesus’ neck hangs a coral necklace, an object that was customarily given to children as a propitiatory gift. In the side compartments of the image are depicted the two patron saints of Trento, Vigilius and Sisinnius.
