Our Lady with the Infant Jesus reliquary

Museu de São Roque
Lisboa, Portugal

Image in silver of Our Lady and the Infant Jesus in her arms, with a circular base of the same material. Well chiselled sculpture, alternating the smooth and the polished surfaces of the cloack, faces and hands, with the rugged textures of hair and details of the clothes. The figure of the virgin curves lightly to the right, the expression denotes a certain manneirist style, breaking with the Renaissance canons. The expressiveness of he faces, like the schmatics of the representation of the hair, also reveal a certain archaism of the sulpture. The halo of oval silver, in the shape of a radiant sun, is formed by two concentric hoops with interweaving decoration; rays appear from its interior, alternating triangular straight profiles rays with sinuous rays, of shimmering style. This halo does not belong to the original sculpture. It would have been added in the 17th century, seeing as this type of aureole is characteristic of that time. The cooper gilt cubic base, decorated with inset coloured stones of crystal and bells on the corners, also do not belong to the original sculpture, although the oldest kept inventory in the Historical Archive of SCML from 1698 make a reference of them.
