Ouroboros Dish

William De Morgan1872

United Kingdom

A large charger decorated with a ferocious ouroboros amongst foliage. This mythical creature is usually a snake or dragon-like beast which eats its own tail to represent rebirth, renewal and eternity. The design has been added using the wax resist technique. The ouroboros would have been painted in molten wax which set solid. The glaze is then painted over the wax, and fired in the kiln. The heat of the kiln would melt the wax leaving the stunning lustre pattern.
