'Paintings with Flower Decorations by Constance Spry', on display at the Cooling Gallery, 92 New Bond Street, London. Spry often used paintings as inspiration for her arrangements.
In 'Party Flowers' she mentions - "William Van Aelst, a painter of the seventeenth century, made a little picture of roses and carnations which even in cheap and not very good reproduction stirs the heart and for me stirs the imagination too. So that I took all the hints I could from his delicious painting and tried to reproduce it in real...Naturally the reality fell short of the dream but that was better than no dream at all. Another picture, 'Bouquet' by Van Dael, was a source of inspiration too...A touch more lavish perhaps but still simple is the arrangement of roses in a basket, the thought of this came from a picture by Fantin Latour. Any one of these might be used in decoration for a small party, or several of them might form a theme for a larger occasion."
