In the early seventies, a group of miners took over a sand mine and built Palo Alto, Mexico’s first housing cooperative. Since then, residents own houses and amenities collectively. Over decades, they have resisted real estate speculators, who have surrounded their neighborhood with corporate buildings and high-end housing. Houses were designed to grow incrementally.
