Lisbon, Portugal

In 1987, Ratton Cerâmicas was founded in Lisbon. This gallery, whose aim to simulate and publicize the creation of contemporaneous tiles by Portuguese and foreigner artists, has encouraged them to show interest in the specific types and techniques of this support as a vehicle for their diverse individual poetic discourses. In this context the painter Jorge Martins (b. 1940) created specific projects for tiles: the former working with physically imposing abstract objects, geometric and organic signs that introduce a powerful dynamic into the sorroundings.
