INSIDEOUT is a community art project covering the border between psychiatry and visual arts, and the border between painting and community art. Together with more than 100 (ex-)psychiatric clients, artist Baukje Spaltro produced a landscape of moods, inspired by the Frysian landscape. A Cyclorama of 40 meters in total made by a community of 180 (ex)psychiatric patients in the Frisian region, in the north of the Netherlands..
This panorama depicts an unknown and inspiring inner world to the public. It shows the many talents within psychiatry and demonstrates what a community (in Frysian: mienskip) can achieve together. It is also an invitation to a different and more focused look at both the Frysian landscape, the other and psychiatry itself.
Through a process of discussing, brainstorming, sketching and painting, participants have provided their own perception of the Frysian landscape. Spaltro has used these personal moods for an overall artistic concept. Participants have worked at nine locations thought the province of Friesland. Every group used one Frysian landscape theme, such as the lakes, the woods, the horizon, the clouds, the meadows or the mudflats. The bright fluorescent prime invites stepping out of your comfort zone and working from the personal inner world.
