Roelant Savery became a specialist in animal painting at the court of Emperor Rudolf II (1552 – 1612), who kept an exotic zoo. Depictions of Paradise were ideally suited to this specialism. We are presented with an exotic collection of animals living together in harmony. The naked Adam in the distant background seems to be just an excuse for Savery to indulge in his own specialism in the foreground.
