The rock shown here on display at the Adler Planetarium is a fragment of a car-sized meteoroid that flashed through the sky over Chicago’s south suburbs and exploded on March 26, 2003. The fragment crashed through the kitchen ceiling of a couple’s home in Olympia Fields at over 200 miles (322 kilometers) per hour, before ending up in a pile of laundry in the basement.
