Paul Schultze-Naumburg increasingly combined his cultural criticism with a racist ideology. The high point of this radicalisation was his polemical essay ‘Art and Race’ (1928), in which he attributed artistic decline to the degeneration of the ‘Nordic race’. He thus created the theoretical foundations for the ‘Degenerate Art’ campaign later initiated by the National Socialists.(Carlo Paulus)
