Archaeological excavations of Yarmukian settlements, established some 8,000 years ago on the banks of the Yarmuk and Jordan Rivers, have revealed hundreds of figurines, which are among the best-known prehistoric works of art. Half were made of clay – some consider them to portray a prehistoric goddess – while the other half were made of pebbles, like the figurine; their phallic form probably represented a male divinity.
