The abrupt, sharp slopes of the Douro’s granite banks conditioned how a particular construction was installed, which today forms one of the city’s most iconic and unique features. This steep drop dictated the need to build a bridge with two levels, allowing connection to the lower and upper access points. Ancient settlement on top of the Morro da Sé (Cathedral Hill), where the Cathedral complex and the Bishop's Palace were built, combines with the medieval urban fabric, which still remains despite the outward transformation of the built heritage.
