Tokyo, Japan

This petition to display the license was written to Takenobu Iwanami, Chief of Daizenryo (Office of the Palace Table) by Kamenosuke Sawada, the fourth proprietor of Isehan-honten. It was a draft, so there are traces of modifications including painting over mistakes with ink and the adding of the words “at any time.” Daizenryo was one of the offices under the Imperial Household Department charged with serving meals to the Emperor and state guests and preparing banquets to celebrate official festivals (the name Daizenryo was changed from Daizenshiki in 1907).
