The Philodendron species inhabits mostly the tropical and subtropical forests of Latin America, occurring all the way from Mexico to Argentina. In Brazil, there are 168 known species, and 79 of them are endemic to the national territory. Taxonomic and floristic studies of this group have been undertaken in Brazil over the past decades, resulting in the discovery of new species.
