The last masterpiece of royal art at Versailles, executed in 1788, on the eve of the French revolution. The wardrobe cabinet constitutes one of the rare large-scale developments undertaken by Louis XVI in his interior apartment. This little cabinet scarcely measuring 13 m2 was accessed by a door concealed under the curtain of the alcove in the king's new bed chamber – installed for Louis XV in 1738, it enjoys exceptional luminosity thanks to the two large windows overlooking the Stags Courtyard. The gold and white panelling in this cabinet is unique in Europe and represents a shining example of French decorative art in the late 18th century. This cabinet was completely restored in 2009 thanks to the generosity of Lady Michelham of Hellingly, through the intermediary of the Society of Friends of Versailles.
