  • More Information: Artist Severin Nilson may be regarded as one of the great pioneers of documentary photography in Sweden. Nilson was educated at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts between 1865 and 1871 and then studied under Léon Bonnat in Paris. In addition to landscape and genre paintings, he developed a penchant for photographic studies of folk life in his home region of Halland. His inspiration came largely from Nordiska museet founder Artur Hazelius, who began his work to document Swedish folklore at around the same time. However, this image shows an urban environment, with Severin's son Knut riding a rocking horse in Humlegården, Stockholm.
