After the assassination of Abraham Lincoln on April 14, 1865, Ford’s Theatre was draped in black mourning fabric and guarded by soldiers. When John T. Ford tried to reopen his theatre several months later, he received threatening letters. Eventually Ford relinquished the theatre to the U.S. War Department.
