  • Photographic Subject(s): Sharmila Tagore is an Indian film actress known for her works predominantly in Hindi cinema. She began her career as an actress in Satyajit Ray's 1959 Bengali film Apur Sansar (The World of Apu) and quickly received Bollywood fame for films such as Kashmir Ki Kali (1964), An Evening in Paris (1967), Aradhana (1969), Amar Prem (1972), Safar (1970), Daag (1973), Raja Rani (1973) and Chupke Chupke (1975) amongst others. She challenged existing conventions by being the first Bollywood actress to appear in a bikini in An Evening in Paris, going on to pose for Filmfare's 1968 issue in one as well. Since the 2000s, she has continued to act in films, essaying mother and grandmother roles. Tagore has received two National Film Awards and two Filmfare Awards, including one lifetime contribution award. Aside from other lifetime contribution awards to Hindi cinema, she was also awarded Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2013.
