Title: Photographic still of Vyjayanthimala from the Hindi film, Jashan
Photographic Subject(s): Vyjayanthimala Bali, more often known by the mononym Vyjayanthimala, is an Indian film actress, Bharathanatyam dancer, Carnatic singer, dance choreographer and parliamentarian. She made her cinematic debut in the Tamil language film Vazhkai in 1949 and became one of the most prominent actresses of the 1950s and 1960s — both in South India and Bollywood. One of the first south Indian actresses to become a national star, she paved the way for other South Indian actresses to makie their forays into Bollywood. Along with Padmini and Ragini, she is considered to have introduced an era of semi-classical dance in Hindi cinema. She is particularly remembered for her roles in Hindi films such as Devdas, New Delhi, Naya Daur, Aasha, Sadhna, Madhumati, Ganga Jumna, Sangam, Jewel Thief and Prince; and Tamil films such as Vanjikottai Valiban, Irumbu Thirai, Baghdad Thirudan and Then Nilavu. After quitting the film industry, Vyjayanthimala continued to focus on her dance career and was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribution to Bharatnatyam in 1982.
