The physician Yutog Yontan Gonpo (1126–1202) is the main author of the Yuthog Nyingthig, an important medical text. His youthful, cleanly shaven face, unusual lotus crown, and other attributes—the sword and book representing knowledge and the vase filled with a triple jewel symbolizing long life and abundance—mark the outstanding qualities of this lay practitioner. At the top of this painting, the Five Buddhas are shown in an unusual semi-wrathful form embracing their consorts and holding skull cups in addition to their family attributes. Four offering goddesses dance around the main figure. At the bottom the horseheaded Hayagriva is surrounded by four yoginis.
