One of the best cherries in the world comes from the Jerte valley, and it also has a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO).

The Picota Cherry is a variety that comes from the Jerte valley in northern Extremadura, where it is grown according to 17th-century tradition. Due to its superior quality and taste, it is the most highly regarded variety of cherry. It is stalkless, therefore stays attached to the tree during the harvest. The cherries are grown using traditional techniques, in the fresh air and fertile soil watered by crystal clear rivers, surrounded by mountains over 6,500 feet high. Once they reach optimum ripeness, they are hand-picked and collected in chestnut baskets, using centuries-old methods. Jerte Picota Cherries are then individually selected at the foot of the tree.
