Originated in the late Ming and early Qing dynasty, the oil-paper umbrellas of Luzhou in China’s southwestern Sichuan province are shining with renewed vitality in modern times. In all the colorful decorations that Luzhou oil-paper umbrellas are known for, the incomparably exquisite colorful silk threads that cover the stretchers all over are the most outstanding.
Crafted with such an ingenious skill by making more than 2000 stitches in colored silk threads, this umbrella shows strong features of folk art as well as traditional craftsmanship. Meanwhile, it represents an innovation in modern Luzhou umbrellas by including recurring specimen of petals and leaves on the fabric of canopy, ending up with a refreshing form that integrates modernity and tradition.
