On January 16, 1854 (near the end of the Edo Period) Perry fleet visited the coast of Kanagawa (Yokohama City, Japan) to open Japan to foreign trade from the United States of America. This picture scroll depicts the situation of the equipment for war vessel and U. S. forces of the Perry fleet in detail. On this scene, Mississippi of the steam frigate which Perry boarded is drawn and the size of the ship is also written. In addition, the device to down a small landing ship into the sea is pictured. We can understand what Japanese people of the Edo period recognized to be a big menace militarily from the detailed expression of this picture.
