Pietà (copy from Michelangelo)

Leone Leonic. 1560

Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana

Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana
Milano, Italy

Also this copy of Michelangelo’s Pietà comes from the famous Casa degli Omenoni, where Leone Leoni kept his collection of plaster casts. Leoni’s collection later became the property of Bartolomeo Calchi, who – as the Latin inscription on the base recalls – donated this copy of Michelangelo’s masterpiece to the Ambrosiana. It is important to note that this copy shows us the state the original was in prior to the 1736 restoration of the Virgin’s left hand and of Christ’s right hand.
