National Museum in Wrocław
Wrocław, Poland

This stone sculpture originated from the Church of St Mary on Sand in Wrocław, and is one of the largest free-standing figures depicting the Lamentation of Christ taken down from the Cross and placed on His Mother’s knees. The subtle representation of the Virgin Mary’s sorrow, her idealised youthful looks and softly draped folds of her robes are the characteristic features of the style popular in the 1430s, known as the style of Beautiful Madonnas, the International (Gothic) or the Soft style.
