Leonaert Bramerca. 1640

Brukenthal National Museum

Brukenthal National Museum
Sibiu, Romania

The scene presented in this painting is a realistic depiction of Pilate’s symbolic gesture (Mathew 27, 24), in disclaiming all responsibility for the sentencing of Jesus.
The painting is signed L. BRAMER lower left and is attributed to around 1640; it is a work of the artist’s maturity, presenting a not very elaborate, but dynamic drawing.

  • Artist Biography: A representative of Dutch Baroque, a painter of biblical and historical subjects as well as landscapes, portraits and genre painting, Leonaert Bramer was born in Delft. He was taught by Willem van Vliet and Van Conwenbergh, two local painters who had a keen interest in the work of Caravaggio. Between 1614 and 1628, he travelled to France and Italy and, on his return, he was admitted to the Delft Guild. Perfecting his technique in Italy, Bramer was one of the very few Dutch painters who painted frescoes in his own country; unfortunately, none of his frescoes survived the Dutch climate. He met Johannes Vermeer and there is a hypothesis, according to which Bramer may have been Vermeer’s teacher. ©Dana Roxana Hrib, European Art Gallery Guidebook, Second edition, Sibiu 2011.
