Mary Ann “Toots” Zynsky’s used her signature filet de verre (fused glass thread) technique to create Pina. Made of kiln-fused glass threads that are fired and slumped in a heat-resistant bowl and then inverted over a cone form, the pliable disc shape is later hand-formed by Zynsky using heat-resistant gloves. While her forms initially featured bright, vivid colors in wider, lower vessels, Zynsky’s recent work explores taller forms and starker colors of black, grey, white, and red. Pina is an exceptional example of her exploration of this change from colors such as pink, green, and yellow to the newer, stronger palette that she refers to as the “powerful colors of life and death.”
