This pipe tomahawk once belonged to the prominent Seneca chief Red Jacket, or Sagoyewatha (ca. 1750-1830). The pipe tomahawk, a symbol of diplomacy, was reportedly given to Red Jacket by President George Washington. The donor's father, Dr. John W. Francis, purchased the pipe tomahawk directly from the Seneca chief.
