Sami Chaouki is a Moroccan performance artist based in Canada. His background in process engineering allowed him to know more about sustainability, recycling waste, and the consumption industry. The more he learned the details of how deep we have impacted earth’s health, and how we maintain the capitalist practices of our industry, the more it felt insane to him that we were not rushing to flip the script.
Sami has always loved performance art because of its mixed media nature and its taboo bending potential. With Plastic Fantastic he wanted to capture the surreal aspect of this urgent situation compared to the passive reaction of our governments, and the people in power. Exploring the greedy nature of our society of consumption. The need to be constantly cushioned and assisted by a bubble, virus of assistance plasticity. The endgame of solitude that lies behind wanting to have all of our needs met at any cost.
The people who suffer the most from the climate crisis are the ones who are already put aside by our society.
What will it take for us to actually put a global effort into saving our planet, our civilisation ?
Waste Continents ? Plastic tsunamis ? Complete drought ?
