This illustration is from the 1719 edition of 'Insectorum Surinamensium', and shows the detail of Merian's work. The sphinx moth has a split tongue for only a brief period of its life, and was not recorded until this publication. It has been theorised that Merian observed this detail using a magnifying glass.
