Tenterfield Golf Club was formed following ‘a meeting of gentlemen’ at the Commercial Hotel on 18 May 1901. By 1902, ladies were playing members of the club. Prior to the turn of the century, men, women and children played golf in the area, possibly at links situated along the banks of Tenterfield Creek.
Such was the popularity of the game in northern NSW that a Glen Innes newspaper reported in 1891 that the Bishop of Chester had declared golf “a peculiarly suitable form of bodily recreation for Sundays”. This was, however, only when played without caddies. In 1898, another local newspaper commented that ladies’ golf would soon overtake tennis in popularity.
