H.P. Lovecraft wrote his story "The Call of Cthulhu" in 1928 and "Weird Stories" magazine published it. Though mostly unread during Lovecraft's lifetime, all his literature and in particular his so-called "Cthulhu Mythos" influenced generations of fantasy and science fiction writers who followed him. During the 1980s and the peak of role-playing game popularity, Chaosium published "The Call of Cthulhu" role-playing game and many others in that series. The series continues today and remains one of the most popular RPG systems outside of Dungeons & Dragons. It inspired, among many other spin-off artifacts, a soft and cuddly plush toy, representing the evil monster-god Cthulhu himself.
