Although there is no definite information about the identity of the subject, her clothing and surroundings clearly suggest her high social standing. De Keyser, one of the most prominent portrait painters in Amsterdam, combines great care in executing painterly detail with psychological perception of the woman. The influence of Frans Hals is evident here, as is that of Antwerp court portraiture. The companion piece, Portrait of a Man, is now in the Louvre.

- Artist information: Thomas de Keyser, son of the sculptor Hendrik de Keyser, was a Dutch painter and architect. Extremely popular for his portraits, he was most in demand within the Netherlands until the 1630s, when Rembrandt exceeded him in popularity. Several of Rembrandt's own works show the signs of de Keyser's influence. His paintings are distinguished by a rich golden glow of colour and also by the chiaroscuro, for which Rembrandt was famous. Although a few of his portraits are life-sized, the artist preferred to work on smaller canvasses. In addition to portraits, he executed pictures of historical or mythological subjects.
