Giovanni Battista Moroniabout 1570

London, United Kingdom

This late portrait by Moroni is exceptional in its concentration and austerity, and for the unusual tilt and angle of the head. The head and hands are painted, like the letter itself, with the rapid and economical handling that characterises the late works of the painter.

The sitter has not been identified. He was once described as a lawyer on the basis that the contraction 'Magº' should be read as Magistrato (Magistrate). Suggestions for the place name at the end of the inscription have included the following north Italian towns: Rovato, Rovetta, Roncola, Rancia and Romano.

  • Artist Biography: Moroni is one of the most famous North Italian portrait specialists of the 16th century. He was a native of Albino, near Bergamo. In his early years he worked in Brescia and at Trent (1551-2). Later altarpieces and portraits were painted for clients in and around Bergamo and Albino, where he settled in 1561. His portraits have great psychological penetration, which owes less to his master and more to the Venetian tradition of portraiture as it had been evolved by Giorgione and Titian.
