東京に生まれる。油絵を独習し、1914年の巽画会に「酒倉」を出品、岸田劉生に認められる。翌年岸田劉生、木村荘八らと草土社を結成。1921年二科賞を受賞。1922年春陽会の創立に客員として参加する。書、随筆、歌などの著作も多い。1975年文化勲章受章。
