Even tho the artist became deaf at the age of 10 after being il with scarlet fever he got a comprehensive education. After his primary education, he studied construction and architecture with a court architect before he started an education to become a cabinetmaker and finally, he started studying art with one of the most distinguished portrait painters of Denmark.
It was hard to find work as a painter in Norway during his time, so he often had to do additional work as a cabinetmaker to make a living and to finance his travels in Scandinavia in look for better work opportunities as a painter. He even travelled to Lofoten in northern Norway where he painted several of his portraits.
