Text till utställningen Avian Allies: The human body is one of the most important sites for artistic display in Papua New Guinea. Feathers and whole bird skins from the multitude of species present in Papua New Guinea are used to create elaborate headdress decorations and other ornaments. Through pigment, ornaments and ceremonial clothing, people are transformed physically and spiritually for rituals, celebrations, or historically, warfare. Such decoration reinforces social identity, both at a personal and group level.
