Painter and lithographer Henryk Żukowski was one of the better-known miniature artists in Vilnius in the first half of the 19th century, as well as being a representative of Romanticism. He attended the lectures of Jan Rustem at Vilnius University, studied literature, languages, drawing and painting. H. Żukowski also produced miniature paintings and lithographs of his contemporaries, delving into the inner being of the person being captured in the portrait, and fancied subtle colour-related nuances. In this portrait, the lighting is expertly conveyed, and the lyrical mood of the woman deep in thought is enhanced by the softly painted lightly clouded sky.
