Ambrogio Bernardino Cucchino, a native of Arona on Lake Maggiore, a shopkeeper of fabrics like his father, in a will dated January 15, 1693, he appointed heir to the Maggiore Hospital of 50,000 lire and property and land in the area of Lake Maggiore. It provides for a legacy of the modest sum of 12 lire for a son, who had not met paternal expectations. The portrait was commissioned from Giuseppe Mariano, son of Domenico, an quadraturist painter, that is, a specialist in architectural perspectives, active in Milan and Bologna, author of frescoes at Palazzo Somaglia di Cassano d'Adda (Milan). In this portrait he seems to be inspired above all by the painting of Giovanni Battista Morone.
