In this full-length portrait, Lady Stanhope's attire indicates how fashionable Indian textiles and styles of clothing were in England during the second half of the eighteenth century, as a result of the success of the East India Company. Lady Stanhope wears a white gown embroidered with gold flowers, tied with a fitted gold sash around the waist. Her pink, taffeta silk coat and Indian-style gold slippers also show the profound influence the culture had on British art of the period. Kettle would later travel to India, further immersing himself in the country's influences.
