Carlo Forlanini (1847-1918) studied at the University of Pavia with Paolo Mantegazza and Camillo Golgi, and graduated in 1870 with the oculist Antonio Quaglino. Hired at the Ospedale Maggiore in Milan, from 1871 to 1884 he was the Head of the "dermatological department" of the Hospital, where he developed the surgical aspects of dermatology. While professor of propaedeutic medical clinic and of special medical pathology at the University of Turin, he has Scipione Riva Rocci (inventor of the sphygmomanometer) as an aid. He taught medical clinic in Pavia. He dealt with the pathology and clinic of the respiratory system; with his brother Enrico, an aeronautical engineer and pioneer, he developed the artificial pneumothorax for the treatment of tuberculosis in 1882. His half-brother Giuseppe, son of his father's second wife, was a primary doctor at the Maggiore Hospital, as the head of the Sierotherapic Institute in 1919.
