Palazzo Vecchio Museum

Palazzo Vecchio Museum
Firenze, Italy

The painting shows Cosimo I de' Medici dressed as an ancient Roman, with the helmet, armour, sword and the staff of office. At his feet the lion Marzocco, symbol of Florence, and the she-wolf with Romolus and Remus, in this case the symbol of Siena, just conquered by the Duke. On the shields the two emblems of the Duke appear: the turtle with the sail and the capricorn. Photo: Simone Lampredi
