Starting in the fifteenth century, the status of artists rose. Collectors now valued works of art for the specific artists who made them. They also sought out portraits of artists, like this one. Born in Rome, Giulio Romano was Raphael’s chief assistant during the years of the master’s greatest fame. Giulio then became the court artist for the Gonzaga family of Mantua, where he attained noble status.
