Often supposed by locals to have been a member of the Hyde family of Bath, founders of Bath Iron Works and Hyde Windlass Company, Henry B. Hyde was actually from away. Best known as the founder of the Equitable Life Insurance Company, he was a New York businessman admired by Chapman & Flint, owners and builders of the ship Henry B. Hyde. Chapman & Flint were themselves Mainers, doing business in New York. Hyde bought a 1/16th share in the vessel for his son.
