Portrait of James Brudenell, Earl of Cardigan

George Romney, probably the most fashionable portrait painter of the latter part of the eighteenth century, painted Sir James Brudenell (1715-1811) against a dark background. The sitter held several important jobs at court and was a Tory Member of Parliament. Romney noted in his diaries that Brudenell sat for this portrait on five different occassions.
