Peale painted this bust-length portrait of Monroe in either Washington, D.C. or Baltimore during the final days of the Monroe presidency. A single letter from Charles Willson Peale, the artist's father, to the president exists requesting that Monroe sit for his son. Rembrandt Peale would later paint a 3/4 length portrait of the president from this original.
