After an original double portrait by Enoch Seeman.

One of a number of versions of a portrait originally created by the court artist Enoch Seeman for the Churchills, to celebrate one of the Duke's military victories during the War of the Spanish Succession. The Duke is seated, pointing towards a plan titled 'The Siege of Bouchain 1711' unrolled by General John Armstrong, whose artillery battery played a decisive role in the battle. Armstrong became Chief Royal Engineer and Surveyor General of the Ordnance, with offices at the Tower of London, where he died: he is buried at the Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula.
