Max Wislicenus was the most important secessionist in Wrocław. He studied in Düsseldorf and Munich, and exhibited his works with the "Secession" association. In the years 1916-1918 he was the director of the Wrocław Academy of Fine Arts, together with the architect Hans Poelzig he introduced a number of reforms in the way of teaching the university. In keeping with the spirit of Art Nouveau, Wislicenus, apart from painting, also deals with weaving and applied arts. The presented painting shows a portrait of an unknown girl named Karin. It was probably a work of private order. The girl was portrayed with a teddy lion, which emphasizes the intimate atmosphere of the painting.
