The two
inscriptions on the upper part of the canvas give us a lot of information
about the painting: the name of the woman portrayed, Angelica de Alessandri,
her age (54 years), the year of execution, 1643, the reason for the painting
and the name of the client, Zacaria Novati, son-in-law of the noblewoman. The
attribution to Carlo Ceresa is based on clear stylistic resemblances to other
paintings of certain attribution - his obsessive search for the real datum,
evident in this portrait.
